Jill Martin to Play Professionally in Ireland

Former Drake women's basketball star Jill Martin of Norwalk has signed a professional contract to continue her career with DCU/Mercy in Dublin, Ireland... She will be playing in the Superleague, Ireland's top division. Her squad, which includes former Iowa State standout Mary Fox, finished second in the league last season with a 15-3 mark and advanced to the Superleague finals, where it dropped a 67-56 decision to Team Montonette Hotel.

"WSU womens basketball has had 4 players quit since March (Jenn DeGarmo, Frannie Vathauer, a transfer point guard from Idaho, and Kayla Rice, who was the MVP in the Missouri HS All-Star game). It is also questionable whether Whitney Rice will ever play again, after sustaining her 5th career concussion. Finally, Shantel Pointer may require knee surgery. I believe that leaves WSU with only 10 players.
Now, wouldn't it be nice if they took a page out of Drake's book and ended up at the NCAA tournament during a year with a relatively short bench?"

Oak Creek’s Stephanie Running, a senior next season, has decided to play basketball for Drake. She averaged 17 points and eight rebounds last season and made first-team all-state for the second time. She was also interested in UW-Green Bay, Evansville, Loyola and Toledo.

Interim Head Women's Basketball Coach Mike Brown

June 24, 2008

Upper Iowa University named Mike Brown as the Interim Head Women's Basketball Coach for the 2008-09 season today. The Polk City, Iowa native will move up from his assistant coach position to lead the Peacock program into the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, or NSIC, in 2008-09.

"We are pleased to have Mike Brown take over as the Interim Head Women's Basketball Coach. He has a wealth of experience as a head coach. He also possesses the knowledge of this basketball program and has three years of experience in the Northern Sun Conference. He has proven to be a loyal, hard working member of our coaching staff," said Gil Cloud, Upper Iowa Director of Athletics.

For the last three years, Brown has served as the assistant women's basketball coach under Ben Conrad. His responsibilities have included recruiting, on-the-floor coaching of the guards, film exchange, and academic monitoring.

Former Peacock head coach Ben Conrad said, "Coach Brown is one of the most loyal people I know. He's a tireless worker, a fierce competitor and has a tremendous rapport with our players. He has been an integral part of our building process over the past few years at UIU."

Prior to coming to Upper Iowa, Brown served as the head women's basketball coach at Iowa Central Community College from 1999-2005, compiling a 115-78 record over that time. The 1999-2000 Iowa Central team won the Region XI Tournament Championship, played in the National Tournament, and finished the season ranked eighth in the country. Brown has coached four All-Americans, dozens of all-conference performers and numerous academic all-region players. Before taking over the helm, Brown served as the assistant coach at Iowa Central from 1997-99.

"I am very excited about the opportunity to take over the women's basketball program as the Interim Head Coach here at Upper Iowa. I want to thank Gil Cloud for giving me this opportunity. I'd also really like to thank Ben Conrad for everything he has done for me, the program, and the university. We are close to turning this thing around. I'm very excited to continue what we've started here," said Brown.

Brown earned his Bachelors Degree in biology with a minor in chemistry from Drake University in 1996.

This site says that Brittnye McSparron (not a typo) has given a verbal to Drake. There's no source for the information, but the site is usually accurate from what I've seen. McSparron is a 5-8 guard at Eastview High School in Apple View, MN. She scored 21.4 ppg last year and was honorable mention all-state as a junior playing in (I think) a large-school class.

The Bulldogs return three starters next season and will begin defense of their MVC title when Drake opens the 2008-09 campaign at home, versus Texas State. The game is tentatively slated for Nov. 14.

As I posted on the men's board, the women's win on Saturday brought the combined men and women's total number of wins for this season to 51. I'm guessing that is a record. Could you verify it?

Also, I'm guessing there are some powers like UConn that have us beat by quite a few, but I would be interested in seeing the top 10 or so. Could we possibly make that list? It might be a fun stat for the broadcast Monday night. We'll be listening.

Take a deck of cards. Remove the jokers and one other card. Throw the deck in the air. The number of cards you see scattered around on the floor is equal to the number of wins that this Drake fan has enjoyed so far this year. Some live, some on television, some on the Internet, and some on the radio. Drake basketball is the greatest value in entertainment and this year it is approaching unbelievable. But then, I BELIEVE!

In a recent thread I made a couple of inappropriate comments concerning th TV/Radio coverage of the MVC Women's Tournament.

Specifically, "Make do with the radio" and "Live with the radio".
That was a very poor choice of words, and I apologize to Laura and Scott.
They have done a great job all season and I have enjoyed listening to them for all the away games.

My comment was a reference to my personal preferences.

1. Be at the games. (Not gonna happen at the tournament. We do make it to all the home games, though.)

2. Watch the TV coverage. (Not available Friday night)
x. Watch on muted TV and listen to Scott and Laura
Added on the excellent suggestion of Grandpa

3. Listen on the radio. (Which will be done in their usual excellent manner by Scott & Laura)

I think Scott and Laura will understand my order of preference.

Certainly no disrespect intended.

vs Evansville Tourney Game

I'm watching CU vs ILS in the first semifinal. Cirone is having a horrible game, but ILS is pulling away, up 10 with 5 minutes left. Not to get ahead, but I'd rather see CU win after Drake dominated them twice in the regular season. Drake played ILS tough twice, though, and they should match up well with either team if they make the final.

Drake beat Indiana State 65-59. The game was close throughout, and Drake led by 1 with 5 minutes left. They used strong defense and good free throw shooting down the stretch to open up a double-digit lead, and hit enough free throws to hold on for the win. Drake plays Evansville tomorrow at 3:30, and the game will be televised on Fox Sports.

Just got back from the SIU ISU game. SIU played a great 1st half and was up by 10 in the 2nd. ISU started hitting 3s and ended up beating SIU by double digits.

Good game SIU! Way to come back ISU.

Big Kudos to the SIU band!!!! The Bulldog Brass could learn from them. (Not that I don't love the BB already)
They are a definate part of the cheering crowd and help get all of the fans going. Way to support the team!

I've complained about this before with the men, but if your major is something like "physical education" or "exercise science," you shouldn't be a first-team scholar-athlete.

One day, on one of our hours-long trips to a Valley school, Laura Leonard was talking about her days at Drake going to the men's games. They had a group that did the Chris Berman nicknames (back in ESPN's infancy) for Drake players. The one I loved the best is "Melvin Mathis Too Hard For Me".

La sent a list of players names to the queen of the nicknames, and here's what "Dr. Liz" sent back:

@ Wichita State Saturday, Season Finale

When the game at Wichita State tips off on Saturday at 1:00, Illinois State, Creighton, and Drake will be in a three-way tie for second place in the Valley, 1 game behind Evansville. An hour later, #1 Evansville will start its game at Illinois State.

If Drake can come up with a win at last-place Wichita, we'll be on pins and needles for another hour to see if Illinois State can knock off the conference leader. The combination of a win by Drake and a loss by Evansville would result in at least a 3-way tie for first place. Throw in a win by Creighton at Missouri State, and we would end up with co-co-co-co-champions.

No pressure, ladies. Just play the game we all know you can in Wichita. We'll all be cheering for you!
