With 902 in the freshman class, Drake wants to be more selective.

"Drake University administrators plan on raising the academic standards to get into the university, and they plan to make the application process more selective. Last year was the first year that Drake University required an essay with the application. Next year, the admissions office is aiming for the magic number of 850 admitted students."

The Chops???

I was just wondering what all of you thought about the new name for the AHL team that'll be in Des Moines. The Iowa Chops.

Personally I still can't even begin to comprehend who thought that was a good idea and logo for a hockey team. I can understand wanting to have something that represents Iowa. I can understand having a name involved with pork if the IPPA put up the money for the naming rights. But "The Chops???" Honestly? That's the best they could come up with? In my opinion, a sports team should NOT be named after an entree! The team recently put up a video of the press conference when they announced it the other week on their website, Iowachops.com. I think it's funny too that in a similar video on the Des Moines Register's website, the owners are already sounding defensive about the team name. They're talking as if to say "Yeah we know it's a crappy name, but it's too late now so we have to pretend to love it because we want to be seen as supportive even though we screwed up with the name." Now, I may just be going on a rant here, but the polls on The Register's and KCCI's websites back me up in that roughly 70% of those who replied agree that the name flat out sucks. It took me 30 minutes to stop laughing after I first heard/saw the new team name and logo and how the representatives are already being defensive about things. all I can say is that the team better be DARN good, or no one is going to take them seriously.

Anyway, what are your thoughts on the new team's name and logo?

Security. The woman behind the counter asked me for my driver's license
to verify my age. I looked in my pockets and realized I had left my
Wallet at home.

I told the woman that I was very sorry, but I would have to go home and

So I opened my shirt revealing my curly silver hair.
She said, 'That silver hair on your chest is proof enough for me'
and she processed my Social Security application.

When I got home, I excitedly told my wife about my experience at the
Social Security office.

She said, 'You should have dropped your pants. You might have gotten
disability, too

decided to hire herself out as a 'handy-woman' and started canvassing a nearby
well-to-do neighborhood. She went to the front door of the first house, and asked

'Well, I guess I could use somebody to paint my
porch,' he said, 'How much will you charge me?'
Delighted, the girl quickly responded, 'How about $50?'

The man agreed and told her that the paint brushes and everything she
would need was in the garage. The man's wife, hearing the conversation

Later that day, the blonde came to the door to collect her money.

left over, so I gave it two coats.'

“This is going to allow the Missouri Valley Football Conference members to take advantage of year-long positive exposure received by the Missouri Valley Conference,” said Missouri Valley Football Conference commissioner Patty Viverito. “Both leagues have developed a tremendous brand name, but the timing for the name change is right. The league expands July 1 with two new members, and with this new, stronger lineup, rebranding now makes sense.”

So let me get this straight. Youngstown State, Western Illinois, and those new members--North Dakota State and South Dakota State--will "take advantage" of the MVC's reputation. But they did absolutely nothing to build it.

If Drake is comfortable with that, why not invite them as all-sport members? I wonder how Maxwell voted.

Those of you over 40 may remember how the Gateway started as a women's sports league (thus Viverito as commissioner), then took on football for 1985. The Missouri Valley still had football in 1985.

I can't say they were competing conferences, because Drake was the only I-AA member of Valley football that year. However, they were certainly different conferences.

This kind of revisionism makes people dumber.

The Indian Chief proclaims, 'So, you are the great

Lone Ranger. In honor of the Harvest Festival, you will be executed in three days. But, before I kill you, I will grant you three requests.

What is your first request?'

The Lone Ranger responds, 'I'd like to speak to my horse.'

The Chief nods and Silver is brought before the Lone Ranger, who whispers in Silver's ear, and the horse gallops away. Later that evening, Silver returns with a beautiful blonde woman on his back.

As the Indian Chief watches, the blonde enters the Lone Ranger's tent and spends the night.

The next morning the Indian Chief admits he's impressed.

'You have a very fine and loyal horse, but I will still kill you in two days. What is your second request?'

The Lone Ranger again asks to speak to his horse. Silver is brought to him, and once again he whispers in the horse's ear. As before, Silver takes off across the plains and disappears over the horizon.

OK, usually, my paddling season starts a little sooner in the year. The Bulldogs run combined with nasty weather has caused a big delay. I had already run 73 miles by this time last year. So now, it's catch-up time.

I'm shooting for 1000 miles paddled this season. I'd love to meet some Nation folks and do a trip or two. Actually, you can join me on any of my trips unless it's too cold, like this Wednesday, and you don't have the right cold water gear.

If you feel like it, post any experience or desires you have. Canoe, kayak? Do you run whitewater or just a relaxing stream? I love wildlife filled streams with sections of class II waves for playing....and eden type spots for sandbar camping. Don't think there is any whitewater in Iowa? Think again. We can go right down to Walnut Woods off 63rd and play all day on class I and II waves, at the right water level. Lizard Creek, North River(Winterset area and under covered bridges) and the Yellow River are experienced paddlers only need apply.

So far I have 2 members of the forum that will be going out with me within the next month or so and a Bulldog player who I will name later after it's confirmed....would also like to go when he returns to Des Moines. Hope it works out....he told me to call him on a certian date so.......

A Register bloggger says Jethro’s BBQ is under development at 3110 Forest Ave in the old Pizza Hut and DM Police Traffic building. It's being developed and co-owned by Bruce Gerleman, who's a co-owner of Splash and has done some historic renovations in Des Moines. The restaurant should be open in time for Relays. It's great to see a new restaurant in that building, especially when it's run by someone with strong Des Moines ties.

I've been playing it for a week and it's been alot of fun.

You can make your own player, train him up, manage a team and play in games.

They also have live action instant replays, and an active forum, brand new game.

Make anything from an OT to a WR to a Kicker or a Linebacker.

Just a little advice, but dont sign to a computer team without looking them over first, you may end up getting screwed and be buried behind the depth chart.

Drake braces for unprecedented flood of freshmen...BY LYNDA EDWARDS....Drake University is prepping for an expected influx of 961 freshmen this fall, which is believed to be its biggest class ever. The estimate represents a big jump from the 780 to 810 freshmen of recent years. In response, the school has added five new faculty members, two counselors and two new student advisors. To house the newbies, Drake bumped up plans to renovate the lower floor of Morehouse Hall from 2010 to this summer. The area had been occupied by Drake's International Center.
