About a week ago when Drake was 4-0, The Times-Delphic ran a game recap with the headline "Watch out Creighton, Drake men's soccer shines early." That probably wasn't the smartest headline, and hopefully whoever wrote it and ok'd it are now aware of the concept of "bulletin board material." The actual story doesn't mention Creighton or anything about an MVC title, so this little student-written blurb shouldn't be a big deal.

Then The Creightonian, Creighton's student newspaper, found the story. Their blog has a hissy fit over the mere mention that Creighton might not win the MVC this year:
What does Drake know about men’s soccer dominance you ask? Well, for one, the Bulldogs are outscoring their opponents 8-0 in their four wins. Offensive dominance might be an understatement – I bet Cleveland State and Centenary had no idea what hit them. And look at that stifling defense. It’s unbelievable to think that SIU-Edwardsville and Wisconsin-Milwaukee couldn’t even muster up a single goal.

Sure Creighton has some good wins. But outscoring Gonzaga, Portland and UC Riverside 9-1 might not be good enough in this year’s Missouri Valley. Some people might point to Creighton’s 3-0 exhibition win over No. 9 Ohio State as an indicator that the Jays are still a power, but it was just an exhibition. The Chiefs won an exhibition game this year, but does anybody think they are going to win a regular season game?

Besides, maybe it’s time for Creighton to just step aside. It gets kind of boring being the class of the conference every single year, and it’s really not fair that the Jays have only let Drake win once in 26 all-time head-to-head matches. Maybe it’s time for Drake to claim its first-ever MVC championship and represent the conference in the NCAA tournament. Why not? It worked out in basketball, right?

Let’s engrave the trophy right now. Your 2008 Missouri Valley Conference Champions, the Drake Bulldogs. Congratulations. It was hard-earned and well-deserved.

[/sarcasm]
I know Creighton men's soccer is really good and has been that way for years, but sheesh...

Volleyball

http://www.mvc-sports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=7600&ATCLID=1565513
2008 MVC Volleyball Preseason Poll
School (1st-Place Votes) Pts.
Wichita State (4) 91
UNI (2) 84
Creighton (3) 81
Missouri State (1) 73
Illinois State 67
Southern Illinois 52
Evansville 34
Drake 31
Bradley 25
Indiana State 12

Drake looks to begin the dawn of a new era under the helm of first-year head coach Phil McDaniel. This week they did "You might be a Bulldog if..." Some of my favorites:

If you think the Drake Relays takes place inside a tent behind a bar, you might be a Bulldog.

If your school president makes more money than your basketball and football coach, you might be a Bulldog.

If you've ever fallen asleep at a basketball game and no one around you woke you up because they were sleeping also, or if no one was sitting around you, you might be a Bulldog.

If you know that Pioneer League Football isn't played with muskets and overcoats, you might be a Bulldog.

If you replaced your garden gnome with a life size Tom Davis statue, you might be a Bulldog.

If you can spell Phaydavong and Emmenecker without looking it up, you might be a Bulldog.

If you have nightmares about a big red blob shooting a three-pointer, you might be a Bulldog.

If your house is closer to the Knapp Center than the nearest Knapp Center parking space, you might be a Bulldog.

If you went to school when Drake went to the Final Four, and you’re still paying off student loans, you might be a Bulldog.
If people mistakenly think you went to Duke, and you don’t correct them, you might be a Bulldog.

If you’ve ever stumbled out of a bar and found a giant track meet, you might be a Bulldog.

If you carry mace, pepper spray, and a whistle because your English class is on the east side of campus, you might be a Bulldog.

If you have never ever wondered why the West End Tavern is on the east side of the school, you might be a Bulldog.
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE DRAKE MEN'S TENNIS TEAM

The men's tennis team won the MVC Championship and 3-peated today. Every NCAA sport gave rankings for the teams that compete in these sports.
The NCAA commends teams that have an APR score in the top 10% within their sport
Bradley's athletic website listed four of their sports which were commended -Creighton had five.
For comparison Davidson had 14 sports commended -Harvard had 18
The Ivy League was the only conference to have commendations for all of its football teams
Where is Drake ? Then they started recruiting Jamaicans and other Caribbeans, and when (those athletes) went to those schools, they wanted to come back (to the Penn Relays)," Johnson said.
There was also a point during that time period when the Kansas Relays, the second jewel of the Midwest Triple Crown and held between meets at Texas and at Drake, "had some difficulties," according to Johnson. With Drake and Penn competing on the same weekend, over time, the prestige of the triple crown faded and more and more intercollegiate squads began heading east to Penn.
"When Kansas started having problems ... that allowed for some teams to come to Penn that normally would have gone to Drake," Johnson said. "Beyond that, you had some coaches moving out of the normal Penn drawing area. And Eastern coaches started migrating West. Those major factors all happening at pretty much the same time really catapulted us forward."

<a href="http://www.thebulletin.us/site/index.cfm?newsid=19513647&BRD=2737&PAG=461&dept_id=576361&rfi=8" target=_"blank" class="SmlLinks">http://www.thebulletin.us/site/index.cfm?newsid=19513647&BRD=2737&PAG=461&dept_id=576361&rfi=8

Drake Relays

I heard that Drake students can get into the Relays for free with a student ID....is that correct?

If so, I might have to head over

Drake Relays - Live Coverage

The 2008 Drake Relays will be held April 24 - April 26, 2008.

The Drake Broadcasting System, the student media organization on Drake's campus, will be televising their 20th annual Relays coverage the entire weekend. Len Dawson, by the way, may be retiring before too long.
------------------------------------------------
Channel 9 will soon have a new weekend sports anchor: Andy Fales from WHO TV 13 in Des Moines.

It was reported in January that Channel 9 was looking to replace Bill Pikus.

Fales, 36, is from St. Louis and is a graduate of Drake. Fales’ last day at the Des Moines station is May 27.

“It might not be long before Andy is the main guy there,” one of Fales’ co-workers told the Des Moines Register.

Hmmm. Let's start an e-mail campaign to all the Deans and Maxwell restating our/my objection to the 2.0 rule. Talking points could be:
1. It's discriminatory in that it only affects the men's and women's basketball programs
2. It's elitist in that it doesn't give students from more disadvantaged school systems a chance to acclimate to the academic requirements of the University.
3. It's a punishment for something that happened over ten years ago and no longer serves a useful purpose.
4. It puts Drake at a disadvantage from a recruiting standpoint
5. Many times it works in opposition to Drake's diversity goals.
6. It's the right thing to do for the athletes.

What do ya think?

Volleyball Coach

According to the Des Moines Register, Sandy Clubb has "removed" Amy Farber Knowles as volleyball coach.
