Men's tennis gets at-large berth to tournament

They were actually upset by Wichita in the MVC final (first loss in MVC play since 2010), but they still got an at-large selection at 24-3. They're playing TCU in what is basically in 8/9 matchup. The winner gets either #1 UCLA (24-1) or UMKC (unlikely to say the least).

Drake is 0-6 all-time in the NCAAs, but they are actually ranked higher for the first time I believe.

I was reading an article about Stanford football and the type of student they recruit. That prompted me to look at the ACT/SAT scores of D vs all the other MVC schools to see what the discrepancy is in scores...if any.

A-C-T! A-C-T! A-C-T!

To be fair, many of the MVC schools are public and are somewhat 'required' to have a lower threshold for admittance.

Personally, I hope D's new bball coach (whoever that may be) would use this info as a recruiting tool.

Why would the powerbrokers of a fringe sport set parameters on free publicity?

That’s a question central Iowa television folks were asking last week, after Drake Relays officials issued a series of coverage restrictions, as mandated by USA Track and Field.

The intent was to ensure ESPN2 would have first dibs at airing highlights during a tape-delayed broadcast Saturday night.

“It’s just absolutely ridiculous,” Keith Murphy of WHO Channel 13 said after the restrictions were announced. “You take local affiliates, who have provided you with non-stop, complete coverage of the Drake Relays, not just during that weekend, but at appropriate points year round. … And in your market of by far the most interest, they can’t show the highlights on their newscast.”

At the same time, track’s biggest stars sometimes feel overlooked. Coincidence?

“There’s so many great athletes out there, and we just don’t get the exposure we deserve, unless it’s the Olympic Games,” said hurdler Aries Merritt, a gold-medal winner in London. “So people think we only run every four years.”

Adding to the angst, many of the guidelines were confusing.

For example, the terms of media access No. 6: “No finish-line footage may be recorded for any sprint event, and/or any event that is part of the USA Track & Field Championship Series broadcast. This may include youth and masters events.”

“Logic would tell me they’re interested in the London Games Rematches,” said Andy Garman of KCCI Channel 8. “They’re interested in Lolo (Jones) and Jenn Suhr and those people. But because it is so vague, does that include the girls’ 3,000? Does that include the boys’ high hurdles? If there is a record-breaking performance, what do we do?”

By most accounts, Drake officials did a good job of working with local media and extending a little longer leash. Still, Saturday’s 6 p.m. newscasts were allowed to only show snippets of the women’s 100 hurdles, featuring Jones, a hometown favorite.

It was a buzz-kill, in a sport that needs all the buzz it can get.

For the first time since the 1995, Drake actually wins an event at the Drake Relays! Drake's Austin wins the men's 5,000 to end the night.

First time I've ever heard a Let's Go Drake chant at a track meet, drowning out the Lets Go Hawks chant at the other side of the track. the Hawkeyes lose again.

Anybody want to see the No. 27 Drake men's tennis team? They are playing twice this Saturday. At 10 am they take on nationally ranked Wisconsin Badgers (just added to the schedule today, I'm assuming because they play Iowa on Friday and they want to try to get a Top 30 win to boost their tourney resume) and then Illinois State at 2 pm.

Both should be wins, but both could be tricky. First one because Wisconsin is a good team. Second one because we might be tired from just finishing a match against Wisconsin.

Drake University coach to attend Queens/Jackson Meet

THE Queen/Grace Jackson meet attracts many fans and college coaches each year.

Drake University's assistant track and field coach LaRon Bennett will be in attendance to observe Jamaican athletes in action with the intention of identifying student-athletes capable of competing at the NCAA Division I level.

More than a year ago, US Army Major Trevor Nelson, a civilian attorney with the US Department of Defence, and a member of the Drake Alumni, contacted Drake track and field head coach Natasha Kaiser-Brown, a two-time Olympian and silver medallist, to suggest that she consider a visit to Jamaica.

Drake has typically not recruited student-athletes from the Caribbean and other tropical locations due to the adjustment with Midwest winters, according to Kaiser-Brown.

"Jamaica has some of the greatest athletes in the world, but attracting them to the Midwest has been difficult," Kaiser-Brown added.

"I have often been reluctant to recruit warm-climate athletes because our winters can be challenging to those who have not experienced cold weather."

However, Nelson, a 1986 Kingston College graduate and KC track team captain and later, a graduate of Drake (1991) who earned an athletic scholarship in 1987, assured coach Kaiser-Brown that many Jamaican high school student-athletes simply want the opportunity to experience college and Division I athletics in the United States regardless of the weather. Regardless of climate, these young students are looking for a world-class educational experience combined with a knowledgeable coaching staff.

Former DU athlete and the Preakness

Jerry Pezzetti, Ankeny football coach, was talked about on the Preakness telecast. It was noted that one of the horses entered, Cozzetti, was named after Coach Pezzetti. Pezzetti is a former DU Baseball letterman and this past winter was recipient of the Double D Award. Pezzetti has been a football coach for 50 years.

A bit interesting that the most recent Drake Relays generated literally no Drake Nation interest. The quality of Drake's Track teams and Relays has been in steady decline over the years. At some point soon regime change would seem appropriate. It is a shame that when Chris Bucknam was contemplating leaving UNI for Arkansas that Drake didn't try to recruit him as Head Track Coach and Relays Director

While in STL, I got the chance to hear a couple of other school fight songs. Listen to these two pairs of songs and see if you can tell any 'similarities'. Even to my untrained ear it was pretty noticeable.
