Cory Parker, a 6-7 forward from Aspen, Colo, has agreed to walk on at Drake. He is averaging more than 20 points and 6 rebounds a game for his 20-2 team. Last year he averaged 23.5 points and 9 rebounds, and was a unanimous choice for 3A Western Slope MVP.

Trust the coaches that he has the future to contribute and sounds like he has the grades also to get other scholarship help- will be interesting to see- am sure they would have not stayed on him with all the exposure the Dogs are getting now - would like to hear a little more about his style

Here's a quote from his coach:

Parker’s club coach Dave Matthews had this to say about Cory’s game, “great shooter and ball handler who can mix it up inside as well.” Matthews goes on to say that Parker is, “One of the most balanced offensive players in the state, who will make many mid-major schools very happy and would be a great fit in the Ivy League.”

Here are his high school stats. Averaging 20.2 points and 6 rebounds per game is nice, but I’m impressed by his 3.7 assists and 3.1 steals per game. Those are nice numbers for a big guy. He also shoots 76.8% on free throws, and 38.6% on 3-pointers, both decent numbers for a high school big guy.

Here is his profile on a recruiting site. It says his height is 6-6, and his weight is 215. He describes his game as:

I am a well rounded baskeball player. Although I am big I can play both inside and outside equally well. I understand the game and know how to get the ball to the right man.

This is a good story about a smart play by a star player in the clutch. Parker’s Aspen team is playing defending conference champ Roaring Fork. A win will cinch the conference for Aspen. The game is tied at 36 with the clock winding down:
Aspen called a timeout with 10.8 seconds left on the clock to set up its final shot. The plan was for Parker to drive and take the last shot, hoping for a foul or the basket. As Parker rolled off a screen Taylor set at the top of the key for him, however, two Roaring Fork defenders collapsed on him, leaving Taylor wide open underneath the basket.

(Parker passed to him for an easy dunk that won that game).

“Coach just told us the game is in your hands,” Parker said, “and I saw him at the last second. It was awesome.”

“Part of me was like, ‘I can’t believe I’m this open,’” Taylor added. “They did what they were supposed to do. They saw Cory drive and, number one, you’ve got to stop the ball.”
Good job by a high school kid to resist the temptation to force up a potential game-winner, and find his teammate in great position.

Another article said he's on an academic scholarship. Sounds like he has the potential to be a '4' who can spread the floor with his outside shot. This position is suddenly very deep: Bucky, BE, AT (at times), Vlastuin and Parker.

Let Josh Parker play!
