This whole discussion is making me sick. Having spent 21 years in Southern California I could easily put the kind of lists up of pro athletes who came out of SoCal high schools. And I am sure that anyone from New York City could do the same for that part of the country. Chicago is a big metropolis with lots of people. Some of these people have played basketball in the pros. I get it. So what.

The original point of all of this seemed to be that Drake was finally looking to make in roads in this geographic area. I think it's a wonderful idea that is easier said than done. Recruiting is all about networking and if Drake didn't have coaches with area high school and AAU coaching contacts, they weren't going to get a good look from players. It sounds like the current staff has connections that they think they will be able to leverage.

The comment about the southern Illinois area being a talent pool is a little narrow-minded. The whole Ohio River Valley area has an amazing basketball tradition and has supplied Indiana, Kentucky, Louisville, Memphis (State) and Villanova with a ton of talent over the years.

Des Moines's lack of D-1 talent has been a problem for a long time. That is one reason why Dr. Tom wanted the Captal City League organized. He thought that getting the better high school kids in the summer league would give them a chance to upgrade their game against college level competition. Hopefully, Uhlenhopp will be an example of this.

Let Josh Parker play!

The reason DSM doesn't produce many D1 players is because there is no basketball in the schools until 8th grade.

Dog67...don't worry I'm on your side on this. I now live west of Chicago and the DivI talent permeates the area...Far more than, say, the state of Iowa. I will note that basketball isn't exactly the 'prime' sport in the Bulldog State (wrestling is far more dominant there than say, in Illinois). Regardless, Illinois has plenty of DivI bball talent for D to choose from...I just hope D gets someone good from around here to follow the Cox/Parker legacy. Heck, it may finally give enough reason to play another game around here. When was the last game in the Chicago area, anyway? I remember a game at Loyola, one at Illinois-Chicago, and one at Northern Illinois...but those were at least 5 years ago?!

Oh golly, hard to believe a city with a bigger population than the state of Iowa might have more D1 basketball talent. What a shocker. And my dad sells more ads than your dad so there.

We could go on for days debating this....the Chicago area has 3 times as many people as the state of Iowa.....and produces 5-10 times as many D-1 basketball players per year. And my dad could beat up your dad.

I jumped your shat because you were all smarmy about whether Drake could pull off recruiting in Illinois now that they have recruiting connections in the state. My point above was that it's easy to talk about recruiting an area but something that can't be done unless you have those connections. Since the Drake staff now has connections to Chicago, I expect to start seeing more players from this area showing up. Just like we saw Michigan kids showing up as a result of CD's connections to that state.
