Don't you have to score in more than one consecutive possession to make a run? Not sure that Drake did that tonight.

Drake had some 5-0 runs in the second half. Does that count? Ooh, they had a 6-0 run on Hall's &1 followed by Eaddy's 3-pointer, and that was even on consecutive possessions. That was the longest run I saw. And that makes me frown.

Why would I delete that? It's the first thing that's made me smile since about 7:06 tonight.

Keeler's blog

Keeler nails it in his blog from halftime:
-- Mercy, does this team miss Adam Emmenecker. Either Butler's defense is better than we thought or this team can't find an open man to save their lives. There was a lot of cutting, weaving ... and frustrated looks. Midway through the first half, the Bulldogs' assist-to-turnover ratio was two to eight. Yikes.

-- Adam Templeton's first-half line: Zero points, two rebounds.

-- First half scoring for the hosts: Josh Young nine, Bucky Cox five. Everybody else: zero.

-- Other than the (mostly) full house and cool pregame video prior to player introductions, it's like last year never happened. Not good, coach. Not good.
Are you frickin kidding Keeler is an idiot. No point guard can feed the dead fish offense Phelps is running. Parker JB and Stanley all could have driven and fed the ball effectively if anyone on the team was moving cutting or attempting anything that remotely looked like offense. Why was JY forced into the point position?

When templeton missed his first shot Phelps jumped him, how friggin pathetic. He did the same to JP and JB in the second half. The second half had some 3's but they were not the type of O phelps was running, they were the will of the players. This guy pulls JP and Buckey with 3 min to go? 10 points is now an insurmountable lead because we can't force anything even though we have some of the fastest most aggressive defenders in the Valley. What an absolute travesty. If this continues, look for lots of transfers and decomits.

Welcome to Drake coach Kiffin.

Is there some way for somebody to e-mail this whole thread and the others to Clubb? I'm sure they are in denial. It would be nice if they knew how their fan base felt.

Don't pass up the shot.

Looking over at her trying to get people to stand and cheer in the second half first the student section, then center court I really felt sorry for her. She couldn't see that everyone in the arena knew there was no way this pathetic coach was going to rally the team. We don't preasure the inbound, we don't press, we keep the best defender on the bench JP, we have no set plays that are recognizable. This was not D1 basketball. This wan't even high school. What a total waste of talent and momentum built over the past 4 years.

If this were Southern Ill we would probably not have scored in the first half. I predict Butler will not finish in the top half of the Horizon league. If this continues, we will not win an instate game, let alone a Valley game.

Average attendence will fall to 3,000 by mid season. I really hope I am missing something, anyone, anyone, beuhler? Please tell me im not seeing what I thought I saw.

could this really have been a mass hallucination?

It was pretty depressing to see some of the older crowd back to their old tricks. The only time I saw many stand was when they were throwin shirts and toys. I know we stink right now(thanks, coach and Sandy) but do they really need a chance at a stuffed bullpup to stand? LOL! What tools!!!!

Good halftime show. Man, those drummin kids....(oops....no drum talk)

Lots of nice butts tonight. The only really sweet things to watch were female and about 22.

I don't know about you all but I'm not actually depressed ... I'll be there whether Drake wins 28 or 3 in a year. But, Sandy's really gotta start to wonder about her business model, and how she's lookin' at 2,000 people showing up late in the year if Phelps stays as brilliant as he looks right now.

It's actually a bit amusing to recall, and Big Bull alludes to it tonight, about how Drake tonight would like dribble around for 10 seconds with no particular purpose, then maybe like hand it off, and dribble for some more seconds, then successfully run down the clock to where they had to take a crappy shot, and usually miss it .... it's EXACTLY what we saw with Kanaskie, only with way crappier players. These guys, these players, are better than that now. How could we not be blaming the coach?

p.s. Just for the record, on another point .... Butler had 4 guys starting who pretty much hadn't played at all in college, let alone on the road to start the season at a place that was in the NCAA tournament last year, and they showed up pretty well. Difference was ... they have a good coach and they kept him.

I'm going to buck the trend for a moment, and say that we are dreaming if we think we have a team that is any where near the same team as last year. I fell into the trap thinking we have Bucky and Josh, and therefore we have at least a piece of what we had last year. The fact of the matter is that we don't. Not only that, but we have a new coach with an entirely different system. We are starting over BIG TIME.

But that doesn't have to be all negative and depressing. Give this team, and coach, a chance to get out there and find themselves. We all know that it's not how you start the season, but how you end it that really matters.

We are in transition -- plain and simple. If all of us saw how bad it was tonight, do you not think coach Phelps saw it as well? He will work it out. The players will work it out. We will have more than our share of ugly games, but there will be improvement. We have to wait and see how it all develops. If it doesn't go well, Sandy will make a change when the time is right.

I may not have much company, but I am willing to give this coach halfway through the season before I make my judgement.

I'm gonna take the pessimistic view tonight, because I'm hoping to God that Phelps will hear something of it and wake the freak up. He took a good situation and muddled it into a total crap full of crap. As you allude to, we do have team that MIGHT have been built around two really good players in Bucky and Josh, but the evidence so far is that it has not been. It's just total crap built on stubbornly playing Stanley and Templeton, and putting Bayrenbruch and Parker totally out of position. Templeton is a different subject, but why in the world would you move JB and JP totally out of position? Some people thought during the first exhibition .... hmmm , how will that work out? Totally crap so far is the answer. Probably would be the answer going forward, too. But, I'm tellin' ya right now, Phelps will be too stubborn to make a change, and we're looking at 6-6 at best in non-conference.

The good thing is that the rest of the Valley is total crap at point guard, too, except for maybe Creighton and SIU, once in a while.

Thank you SoCalBulldog...I completely agree. Lets give this until at least midseason before passing judgment. Tonight was bad...but I prefer to have faith that things will get better.

With that said, I was a bit disappointed that Drake did not foul Butler with around a minute left and with a foul to give. Instead, Butler knifed down the court for a layup and essentially ended the game. If you have a foul to give, you need to give it in that scenario. It gives you a shot to steal the inbound pass again and it stops Butler's fast break. Besides, you eventually will need to put them on the line for a one and one...

But again, lets put this game behind us and quit complaining so damn much about the coaching. Sometimes I feel like this board and boards like this one are filled with people who love to overreact and overgeneralize. Give coach some time and be patient with this team. I really think that someday these threads will be bumped to the top and we will have a good laugh about how we wanted to fire Phelps after one real game...

For what it's worth, dbask ....... sitting back in the zone PLUS not being in a position where you put the other team on the line (instead of just taking it out of bounds again) is one of the dumbest things any coach can ever do. It's especially dumb at home, to not do any man-to-man pickup, when you're down 6 to 12 points the whole second half at home. I don't know who you could ever find that would agree with that "strategy". It's just dumb. It's Kanaskie dumb. It's Rudy Washington dumb. It's Abatemarco-because-he-got-overly-excited-or something dumb. It's not what we came to expect, and reasonably should expect, after last year. After last year, we should expect somebody who could manage personnel, substitution, etc., better. This guy's got a ways to go. It's a transition from assistant to head.

I appreciate the optimism and patience dbask and Socal. I wish I could echo it, I really do. However, look at the posts of cdg and drakey. There is nothing occurring on the floor that hints at even the resemblance of a D1 offensive scheme. Are we supposed to simply sit back in our chairs and think it's all good? Or even worse -- blame the players?

Looks like I picked the right D game to go to yesterday

JAX 41
D 9

I know a bunch of folks went from Chicago for Butler game. That drive home is gonna be tough if this a foreshadowing of things to come. I'll suspend judgment for now since I haven't seen them play yet. I hope this coaching staff will make adjustments...quickly. Clearly 48 points against a squad playing 3 frosh requires change.

Based on your name I'm assuming you have not seen this team play. I would probably feel like you if I had not SEEN the Bulldogs, but I have on 3 occasions. There is no reason to htink this team can win 10 games.

Butler found a system that worked years ago and has hired assistant after sassistant to run the system. SIU has done the same thing. Drake blew it. They could have at least tried to get an assistant from Tennessee or someone who had SOME similar offesnive and defensive philosophy.

Don't pass up the shot.

Its not being pessimistic, its coming to term with the reality of the situation. We can pretend that somehow the players will catch to some wonderous new system, but that's not going to happen. A team that can play as bad as we did tonight, will not find themselves midway through the season. I'm not sure we're going to find a win for a while and that pisses me off because we have the talent to do so. Oh, and exhibition games do matter. With that in mind, its time to readjust our expectations. I'll admit, I was wrong about Phelps. I had a friend with me from NC State in the Sendek era and he was laughing and saying, "welcome to Sendek hell, I suffered 4 years of this."
