| Thanks for the input, GG....always enjoy your breakdowns.
Only place I was a little confused.
Gordon Gottschalk (7/2/2009) Simons: I only saw him for a half and he hardly touched the ball. He was guarded by David Smith and he presented a problem for him the few times he did get it.
Who is "he" that created problems for "him"? Did Smith create problems for Simons, or vice versa?

| According to a blogger from the Ames Tribune, here are some of the Drake stats from last night.....
Andre Calvin (ex-Drake) 27 points, 7 rebounds.
Jordan Clarke (Drake) 23 points, 9 rebounds.
Adam Emmenecker (ex-Drake) 4 points, 14 rebounds, 10 assists, 3 steals.
Nick Grant (Drake) 18 points, 9 rebounds.
Notes: Emmenecker apparently made it a goal not to shoot the ball (I kid you not), but proved that it’s really an unnecessary part of an overall great game. He’s missed the past few sessions, but Coke could win it all if he sticks around through the rest of the season.
Ben Simons (Drake) 14 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists.
David Smith (Drake) 36 points, 7 rebounds, 10 assists.
And Granite point guard Josh Young, from Drake, missed both Sunday and Wednesday’s games, but should be back this weekend.
If it's not a misprint, Smith had a helluva game.

That sounds like the Smith I saw. He was very successful in taking the ball to the hole. In my other post the "hes" did get confusing. You are right. Smith presented problems for Simons. Based on the stats it looks like Simons had many more scoring opportunities in the second half.
I saw AE shoot one shot, a 3 and it went in. When he took it he gave the bench a look and they were all laughing, so it sounds like something must have been going on about his shooting (or lack thereof). And yes, AE looked fabulous. I hope Wiseler is taking notes.
3 in a Row: 2007, 2008, 2009. Let's make it 4! |

Just curious.....was Wiseler the one guarding Smith? If so, that tells me a lot about his defense.

Have you watched the league this year? They don't play defense. So it's highly unlikely you can make any judgments on whether someone plays good defense... |

| I finally got to see some games. To me Smith looks like he could be a good player, but it is going to require him to completely scrap his shot and start over. I saw him take one outside shot and his form was ridiculous. He can pass and drive. Kinda Nick Grantish right now.
Simons looks like he can do everything well except maybe rebound. Looks to me like he has the potential to be a 15-20 ppg player if he develops as expected. He didn't get the ball much.
Hawley looked OK, but not ready to contribute. Jones was the same, but he's way too skinny still. Uhenhopp looked OK, but not ready to play significant minutes. Wedel, Wiesler and Van Deest were no shows.
Will Simons and Van Deest have to start?

| SVD will have to start (out of a lack of viable big men). He won't be a great player this year, but will not hurt us. He is a solid player, even as a freshman. As long as he can rebound and alter some shots in the paint, we will be fine.
Simons or Hawley (depending on who coach likes more) will be starting. Simons right now looks to be the option, but there is still a lot of time left before games, lot of change could happen. Depending on how AT looks (if he goes on a shooting slump), we could get a lineup with both starting. Both are very good for freshmen.
Question: How do we play better?

| Two games tonight.....
CIO (White, Smith, Wedel) blew out Peak (Van Deest, Uhlenhopp, Heemskerk)
MOHA (Jones, Hawley, Grant) beat YMCA (Templeton) by 3.
I didn't see the first game, so no idea how anybody looked.
In game 2, Hawley looked real good, probably had 20+ points, including 4 or 5 3-pointers. He also hit both end of a 1 and 1 with about 15 seconds left and his team up 3. Jones barely played. Templeton hit three 3's very early, then hardly touched the ball the rest of the game. He did hit a big 3 with less than a minute left to cut the lead to 1. Interesting that MOHA was 1-6 when Diante Garrett was there, and are now 2-0 without him. He's a dominating scorer in this league, but I think he dominates the ball too much.
On Sunday, it's CIO vs Granite (Young, Simons, Wiseler) in one semi-final and Coke (Emmenecker, Calvin, Clarke, Eaddy, Baryenbruch) vs MOHA in the other. I personally think Granire and CIO are the two best teams in the league, so I think the winner of that game will win it all. Games start at 5:30 at Valley High School.

| Mecha_Bulldog (7/12/2009) Looks like it's Young's team vs. Hawley and Jones' team in the final.
When I left at halftime, it was MOHA (Hawley, Jones) 71, Granite (Young, Wiseler, Duff) 41.
MOHA had started the season 1-6 with Diante Garrett.....then Garrett got hurt, and they didn't lose the rest of the way.

| Granite is making a comeback, but they might be in too deep of a hole to recover. If MOHA wins, I don't know who would get the MVP. Palo?

Dawg_tired (6/25/2009)
Mecha_Bulldog (6/24/2009)
Gordon Gottschalk (6/24/2009) I'm in the minority on this board, but I think SJ has improved.I don't think enough people have seen Jones play this summer for you to be in the minority on anything. Once we have statistically significant scouting, he'll be like a Republican at an Obama worship service. We are talking about "improvement", not "production." There are no significant statistics that measure footwork improvement, understanding where to set up, etc. The closest stats would be rebounds and blocked shots since these are probably the most closely related by-products of improved footwork and positioning. I know I'm going out on a limb here, but I am highly confident that he will have more rebounds and blocked shots in 09-10, than he did in 08-09.
That's not looking like a sure thing right now.
