After running off all of the former coach's players in about a year, WSU coach Jody Adams is accused of racism, verbal abuse, and falsifying practice time sheets by some of her former players. Considering she's a former assistant under Dana Eikenburg, these allegations aren't hard to believe. It's sad that the WSU administration is supporting Adams 100% with apparently little investigation of the charges.

| I have no idea whether these allegations are true. However, I do seem to recall that allegations about Dana E's mistreatment of players arose in the year after Adams was gone, and not during her tenure at SIU. Also, Adams was someplace else before going to WSU, and no allegations of mistreatment were made publicly about her there, as far as I know.
My own opinion about Jane Albright's teams is that they are not well conditioned, which in and of itself, reflects a lack of discipline. That was true at Wisconsin and at WSU. If a new coach comes on board and expects her players to get with the program and be well conditioned, then that in and of itself is probably going to tick some of them off. Does that mean that I think that some players took their anger out by lying publicly? I don't know any of them so can't comment on their character.
My bet is that WSU is doing an internal investigation and will keep an eye on Adams. They just won't say so publicly at this point.
These two situations -- the one involving Dana E at SIU and now this one at WSU -- help remind us of how important character is in recruiting coaches and players.

| Remember Drake's last coaching transition? A new coach comes with a new system of play as well as a different approach to relating to players. Some make the transition, others don't. It may be better for WSU to make one big change and then build a new system from there. Drake lost a lot of players between Stone and Stephens, too.
I read the Wichita Eagle story and they got the practice time sheets via a FIO request. Albright's (can't just use initials since Jane Albright and Jody Adams have the same initials) last year they averaged 12.5 hours a week of athletic time, Adam's first year was 19.5 hours / week. The NCAA limit is 20 hours. For the returning players that's a 56% increase in time commitment, that can feel like a world of difference. I also know many programs expect players to shoot their free throws 'on their own time' rather than commit practice time to that.
One of the male practice players was interviewed. He said the old regime was easy on the players and only used positive encouragement while the new group would also get after players not getting it done. He also said it was no worse than his high school football practice.
The article also said the senior women's administrator traveled with the team almost the entire season, so I'd expect the administration has a pretty good idea what is going on in the program. I'd bet they are better off with the change than they were with Albright. |
