| Joe Posnanski has his readers coming up with the best athletes all-time at different schools. He has provided the categories of football, basketball, baseball, and wild card. I know Drake doesn't have a baseball team (did they ever?) but I was wondering who would rank as the best ever for Drake?
My (somewhat) educated guesses:
Football - Johnny Bright
Basketball - Willie McCarter
Golf - Zach Johnson
Soccer - Ezra Hendrickson |

Drake did have a baseball team until the mid-70's. According to baseball-reference.com, Lee Stange was the most recent Drake player in the big leagues. He was a pitcher in the AL from 1961-70. There was only one other Drake player in major league history.

| I think he was probably just indicating that he has never heard of soccer? At this point, I would guess that soccer would probably have some of the better athletes on Drake's campus since I believe they receive scholarships. It would probably be betwen soccer and Basketball.

I'm questioning the sport as your "wild card" entry. You put golf up there, not me. I'll question that too. If Drake is going to have a wild card, what about track?

| Track definitely makes more sense but I couldn't come up with any athletes that I thought had a better career than a 15-year professional soccer career or a Masters championship.
I suppose Kevin Little is a possibility. I don't know anyone else who would be, though.
I threw my list out there more for discussion than anything else. |

| Are you talking about athlete while at Drake? If my info is correct Zach was the 2nd or 3rd golfer on the team -- great pro career though. If you're counting the entire career and not just at Drake, the basketball player hands down has to be Willie Wise. He was an absolute stud for the ABA. One of the top forwards in the league along with Dr. J and George McGinnis.
BTW, if golf is a category, I nominate Gordon Gottschalk.

Gordon, considering your only collegiate competition was body surfing at UCSB you can't nominate yourself for Drake Golf.
Drake had a very good wrestling program as well.

Since he probably graduated in '70(?), I doubt he's a rapper.

| EZ is the man!
If you include women's sports, I'd nominate Dani Tyler. She made the Atlanta Olympics as part of the women's softball team.

| Although Kevin Little had a much longer career my vote for Drake's best Track and Field Athlete would go to Rick Wanamaker. Rick was a Drake Relays Champion- NCAA Champion -National AAU champion-Pan American Games Champion and was projected as a potential medalist at the 1972 Olympics before he unfortunately sprained his ankle 4 days before the Olympic Trials.
