| From everything I've read, DJ Haley is a young man who is very interested in a good education as well as basketball. Drake is certainly a school where academics is #1. Throw in a high level of basketball in the MVC, a Drake team with great young talent, a very nice city in Des Moines, and you can't beat it. I hope DJ agrees after his visit this weekend.

| We're very excited about Jok. We've got a bunch (like four or five) of guards coming in and Jok's purported to be the best shooter of the bunch. Have any of you seen him play? (And of course we can all dream about Peter following his brother.)
We did fire our coach earlier this season. He'd kind of driven the program into the ground. Jerome Allen, who played at Penn in the 90s and is one of the best to ever come through, took over on an interim basis and it's the hope for a lot of us that he'll be given the job permanently. He seems to have really revitalized the team (insofar that that's possible - between injuries, bad recruiting, and defections there's not a lot of D-I talent on the roster now). We beat Cornell a little while ago, knocking them out of the top 25. Hopefully things continue to improve.
Anyway, Haley does seem like a great kid, the kind of guy who'll do great no matter where he winds up. What's your situation with big guys? Penn needs some interior presence desperately and if Haley's got any kind of polish he could probably get some minutes from day one. We were actually pretty hopeful when Greg Echenique transferred from Rutgers. We recruited him hard coming out of high school and he was interested in Penn. But alas for both of us, he decided to transfer to Creighton. |

I know McBulldog has seen him play. I'm actually going to see him play tonight. If you want, I can tell you my thoughts on him after the game. And.....we're dreaming about Peter staying at home and playing for the home-town school.

Drake really only has one big guy who gets any minutes at all....we also have a 7-footer who has never played in his 2 years here. Our one big guy is a freshman, and he's very good. But, we could definitely use more size. The Bulldogs have a whole bunch of 6-7 to 6-8 guys coming back, but they're all perimeter players. I think that DJ, or any quality big man, could see some playing time right away.

| I've seen Dau play. IMO he is going to need a transition period (like most freshmen) to play D1 ball. He is very good but needs to gain some strength for the next level. Dau's younger brother, Peter Jok, broke his hand about 7 weeks ago and he is still trying to get his mojo back. Roosevelt plays Hoover HS tonight in a sub-state game at Hoover. Hoover is the only school to give Ames High School (Harrison Barnes) a run for their money this year and they still lost by 9. Hoover is a very physical team and has beat Roosevelt twice this year.

| Yeah, any impressions from Jok's game tonight would be great. Because we're so thin at guard and need shooters so badly I doubt we'll have the chance to give him much time to adjust next year. Then again, the talent gap between the MVC and the Ivies, even when we're having a good year, is pretty wide.
And, hey, as long as he doesn't pick VCU, Haley's guaranteed so see some great track. |

| Well, my student cohort never held up the Haley signs, BUT she came over to give them to me before leaving the game and DJ was right behind us so I showed them to him. He laughed.
AND, I sent my friend over who grew up in CA and moved to Des Moines after she graduated from Drake. She encouraged him to make the right decision for him, but explained that she never thought she'd end up here.
We did our part. He seems like a stand up guy for sure! (I'll post on recruit as well).
I did talk to Josh's younger brother and he seems just as amazing as Josh. Here's how our encounter went.
Me: "Are you Josh's brother. You look just like him."
Little Josh: (huge smile, with braces) "yes, ma'am"
Me: "Do you play ball? What year are you?"
LJ: "I'm a freshman"
"Ah, then, I suppose you aren't really thinking about college yet."
LJ: (big smile) "No ma'am"
It kind of ended there, but he was just so polite! Good kid!!!

No surprise here. Haley wants to major in engineering, and Drake doesn't have an Engineering program. I'm surprised that he even visited.

| We were told he wants to pursue a music major actually. Interesting that Drake was still recruiting him knowing they didn't have an engineering program. Well you guys have Seth Van Deest who is the man inside for Drake and only a freshman while Larry Sanders is likely leaving early for the NBA draft at VCU, leaving a ton of playing time to be had. That probably played a factor. VCU's sustained success over the past couple of years may have also played a part.
Drake will be fine and has some good young players. I'm sure we'll be going head-to-head for recruits in the future like we did for Bradley and Haley. Good luck with the rest of the season! |

| Good luck to DJ at VCU.
A little info...
DJ is playing basketball to finance his education. He wants to design rockets for NASA that disintegrate in space and leave no waste. He wants to be in a NASA program by the age of 23. He will be in California for his summers during college for an internship.
Sounds like a very smart guy. |

If you can believe Scout.com, VCU also had offered Jeremy Jeffers, one of Drake's fall signees. Our paths are definitely crossing on the recruiting trail.

| | Yeah he's a good one. Will Wade was recruiting him for VCU. We ended up getting a higher ranked guy at his position from the same state of North Carolina in Reco McCarter (ESPN 91 Grade with offers from Virginia Tech, Georgia etc, he visited Oklahoma and Georgia before committing to VCU). That said, Jeffers was very much a VCU target and will be a good player for Drake. |

Yes, that was Michael Bradley, who was mentioned by DistrictBaller last night.

The six feet high walls of snow probably sent a chill up his spine as well.
Tomorrow has arrived and the sun is up. |
